Visakhapatnam: Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari was elected as the new Mayor of the Visakhapatnam here in Thursday.

Kumari, a YSR Congress Party Corporator of 11th ward of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation was selected as Mayor, whereas, Senior corporator Jiyyani Sridhar from Ward 52 was elected as a new Deputy Mayor.

In the past, Rajani Ramani of Congress party was first woman to become Mayor and now Hari Venkata Kumari is the second woman elected as Mayor of Visakhapatnam.

However, YSRCP did not announced the mayoral candidate till the last minute of the election and many people were expecting that the city president Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav would be chosen candidate for the post.

However, the party was clearly hinting to choose a woman candidate for the post. They were wanting an educated woman from the weaker section of the society to be elected as the Mayor. And with Venkata Kumari, the party fulfilled their criteria. She is a trained graduate teacher and recorded the biggest margin of 4850 votes in the Arilova area.

Newly elected Mayor along with Deputy Mayor sworn in at the GVMC council hall. The ceremony was attending by Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy along with MP MVV Satyanarayana and BV Satyavathi.

Kumari, while interacting with the media promised to work for the industrialization and development of Visakhapatnam.

Meanwhile, YSRCP after winning the recent polls, took a victory rally which was led by Vijay Sai Reddy for about 250 meters from the Central Park to GVMC office.
